Jacques Barraban is a French illustrator , the best zoological and botanical illustrator of his time.

Biography
Barraban was born into the family of Jacques Barraban and Maria Anne Bebit in 1767. He was baptized on August 31, 1768. His father worked at a local tapestry factory. Jacques later moved to Paris, where he worked in tapestry and carpet stores. He studied at the Royal Academy of Painting under Joseph-Laurent Malain.
He was appointed professor at the art school in 1807 and died two years later.
His only daughter Adeline became a musician.
Creativity
Between 1801 and 1804, Barraban performed a series of watercolors of birds and flowers by direct order of Napoleon Bonaparte . But, his most important work, undoubtedly, is about 300 drawings, which he completed for three large ornithological monographs by François Levalyan :

- Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis et des rolliers, suivie de celles des toucans et des barbus , Paris, Denné le jeune & Perlet, (1801–1806), 2 volumes.
- Histoire naturelle des promérops et des guêpiers (et des couroucous et touracos, faisant suite à celle des oiseaux de paradis) , Paris Levrault, (1806) 1807, (1816 ou 1818) 3 volumes.
