The Bobbie Rosenfeld Award is the annual award given to Canada's Best Athlete of the Year. The winner is selected by Canadian Press (CP) sports reporters during a vote. The award was first presented in 1933 [1] , a year after the establishment of the Lionel Conacher Award - the best athlete in Canada among men [2] . Ada Mackenzie became the first winner of this award [1] . Since 1978, the winner was awarded a metal disk as a reward. The award is named after Bobby Rosenfeld , who in 1950 was named the best athlete of the first half of the century. The survey takes place according to the point system, when the participants in the vote choose the three best athletes in their opinion [3] . The first choice gets three points, the second - two, and the third - one. In 1971, two athletes: Debbie Van Kickebelt and Debbie Brill scored the same number of points - 208. Van Kickebelt scored more than the first places - 55 versus 38, but both athletes became co-owners of the award this year [4] . Barbara Ann Scott was the first woman to be awarded the award by unanimous decision in 1947. The next year, she almost repeated this achievement, but this time one first place was given to Victory Gift [5] .
From 1942 to 1944, the award was not given due to the Second World War [6] . In 1950, the award was not presented, since CP instead identified the athlete of the first half of the century, which became Bobby Rosenfeld [7] . In 1999, Nancy Green was named the athlete of the century, who twice won the Bobby Rosenfeld Prize, became the Olympic champion, won the Canadian Championship six times and won the World Cup twice [8] . In 2008, the award was first presented to a disabled athlete. Its owner was Chantal Petikler , who won five gold medals at the Paralympic Games in Beijing [9] . Barbara En Scott became the first athlete to win this award three times [5] . More often than others, this award received Marlene Stret - 5 times [10] . The last owner of this award was tennis player Brooke Henderson .
