Biography
Kaiserling studied cameral sciences and zoology at the University of Dorpat . He participated in Russian expeditions to the Caucasus and, in particular, in 1858-1859 on a scientific expedition to Khorasan . As part of this expedition, he described not only spiders, but also Iranian species of freshwater fish (for example, Squalius latus ). He traveled to England, France and Algeria . At this time, he met his future wife Margaret, the daughter of the historian and Bavarian ambassador to Geneva, Wilhelm von Dönniges . As a mediator, along with Wilhelm Arndt, he was also involved in the background of the duel between Ferdinand Lassalle and the Romanian Prince Janko von Rakovits in 1864 near Geneva. After his marriage in 1864 to the daughter of Dönniges, Kaiserling left a plan to move to America and acquired an estate in Lower Silesia to engage in agriculture there. However, in the future he devoted himself to a special topic, spiders, copies of which he received from the German-American arachnologist George Marx and other friends. After the early death of Kaiserling, Marx prepared for publication his work Die Spinnen Amerikas. Today this book is of antique value to specialists, since it contains drawings made by the author.
The Kaiserling spider collection covered more than 10,000 species and after his death she moved to the Natural History Museum of London, after the Natural History Museum in Berlin in 1890 refused the offer of the Kaiserling widow to purchase a collection for 15,000 Reichsmarks [1] .
In honor of the scientist, the species of orbiting spiders Argiope keyserlingi is named.
