History
After the release of Mark Lanegan's solo album Bubblegum in 2004, the musician decided to take his mind off solo activities and participate in other projects, one of which was cooperation with Greg Dulley. Both musicians worked with each other several times and, in fact, the idea of The Gutter Twins originated in the early 2000s, but took shape only in July 2007, when the Pitchfork Media website posted a message that the duet of “the two greatest frontmen of the alt-rock era Was signed to the Seattle label Sub Pop . [1] Shortly afterwards, The Gutter Twins page appeared on the label's website announcing the release of their debut album Saturnalia . [2]
In March 2008, the band introduced the listeners to the album on David Letterman's nightly show, followed by a one-year tour of Europe and the USA in support of Saturnalia . The critical reaction to the album was positive, Blast Magazine described it as "a descent into the dark emotions that often hide beneath the surface" and noted that the album "sounds as if it had been written by the long-lost U2 cousin from Seattle." [3]
In September 2008, the Adorata mini album was released via the iTunes Store . It contains only two original songs of The Gutter Twins, not included on Saturnalia , the rest is cover versions of the songs of Jose Gonzalez , Scott Walker , as well as the bands Primal Scream , Vetiver and Eleven . Part of the revenue from Adorata went to the memorial fund of Natasha Schneider , a late member of Eleven and a friend of the group.
In 2009, the musicians toured, performing songs of both The Gutter Twins, and their other projects, as well as cover versions of various musicians. Performing "God's Children", the band usually switched to Bob Dylan's " All Along the Watchtower ", jokingly recognizing the similarity of his own song with the song of the legendary folk rock musician. The performance of “The Stations” always began with a short quote from the introduction to “ Stairway to Heaven ” by Led Zeppelin , Dully's favorite song. At the end of the tour, the group announced a break.
On July 13, 2016, musicians published a message about the revival of The Gutter Twins. [four]
