The Ten Most Remarkable Species ( Top 10 New Species ) is a list of the ten most notable biological species of living things (including extinct organisms) described last year. The compilation of the list is carried out by the International Selection Committee, consisting of scientists who are specialists in the field of biological taxonomy or in related fields. The list includes species that, in a sense, stand out among those described: organisms that have unexpected properties, live in places in which, besides them, almost no one lives, the smallest or largest representatives of a taxon of a sufficiently high rank [1] . The list is published by the (USA) annually in May; this publication is dedicated to the birthday of Karl Linnaeus [2] .

General information

Karl Linney

was founded in 2007 and initially worked at the University of Arizona , later it began working at the and is currently (2014) based in Syracuse .

The lists are announced on the twentieth of May, their publication is dedicated to May 23 - the birthday of the great Swedish natural scientist Karl Linnaeus (1707-1778), “the father of modern taxonomy” [1] , the creator of a unified system of classification of flora and fauna, which summarized and the knowledge of the entire previous period of development of biological science has been streamlined to a large extent; another of Linnaeus' achievements was the definition of the concept of a biological species , the introduction into active use of binomial (binary) nomenclature, and the establishment of a clear subordination between systematic (taxonomic) categories [3] . The first such list was published in 2008; it was dedicated to the species described in the year of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Linnaeus [2] . According to , director of the Institute (and since the beginning of 2014, also president of the ), the initiative aims to “draw attention to the biodiversity crisis and no one well-known researchers who continue to discover and describe new species ” [2] .

Scientists believe that the total number of species not yet discovered by science is about 10 million, that is, about five times the number of species already described [1] .

The number of species of living organisms described in 2013 [1] , 2014 and 2015 was approximately the same - 18 thousand each [4] . The chairman of the selection committee in 2014-2016 was a zoologist from the ( Madrid , Spain) Dr. Antonio Valdecasas . In his opinion, expressed in 2014, an analysis of the list of species described in 2013, which contains a 2-kilogram mammal and a 12-meter tree, showed that in our time, discoveries can be made not only at the microscopic level, that far not all “large” species have been described [1] .

According to journalist Kirill Stasevich, lists like Top 10 New Species are very important because they make the subject of conversation more diverse about wildlife, about the need to preserve biodiversity, that our well-being depends on the well-being of our neighbors, “no matter how strange they didn’t seem to look ” [4] .

Statistics

In total, 101 species were included in the lists published between 2008 and 2017 (in 2013, two species of mushrooms were included in one list item). Among them, the majority were representatives of the animal kingdom (71 species; eight of them belonged to extinct species), the plant kingdom was represented by 16 species, the mushroom kingdom was eight, four species were bacteria , and two species were protists .

Summary List of Views

The scientific names of the species are indicated according to the source lists of the International Institute for Species Research. The “Year” column indicates the year the list was published, the “Higher taxa” column shows the kingdom (usually) and another characteristic taxon of a rather high rank , which includes the species.

The list of the most remarkable species is intended, among other things, to draw attention to those inconspicuous heroes who are trying to overcome the biodiversity crisis by working to complete the inventory of plants, animals and microorganisms of our planet. Year after year, a small community of taxonomists is confidently moving along the path of understanding the diversity of life and those amazing ways of adaptation with which species can survive in our world.

The top 10 is designed to bring attention to the unsung heroes addressing the biodiversity crisis by working to complete an inventory of earth's plants, animals and microbes. Each year a small, dedicated community of taxonomists and curators substantively improve our understanding of the diversity of life and the wondrous ways in which species have adapted for survival.
