Description

Previous New York State Capitol Building ( 1866 )

The current capitol building is already the fourth in a row, the first was a small house near Kingston [2] . From August 22 to 25, 1777, the office of the first state governor George Clinton was located here [3] . The second building was built after the end of the war of independence .

The modern capitol was erected in the period from 1867 to 1899. For 32 years of construction, three teams of architects managed to work on the building. From 1867 to 1875, construction was led by Thomas Fuller (author of the Canadian Parliament Buildings in Ottawa ), from 1875 to 1883 - Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Hobson Richardson , and from 1883 to 1899 - Isaac Perry [4] [5] .

The first floor of the capitol is built by Fuller in the Romanesque style . Then Vice-Governor William Dorsheimer replaced Fuller with architects Eidlitz and Richardson, who built two floors in the classic Renaissance style . The need to increase construction costs has caused a lot of controversy and conflict in parliament. As a result, after being elected Governor of Grover Cleveland and reviewing the increase in funding, the Eidlitz and Richardson team was suspended. The project was to be completed by Isaac Perry, who completed the fourth floor and a Victorian-style roof [6] .

The domes and towers planned in the project were never completed, due to the exhaustion of the margin of safety of the building structure, on which cracks already appeared. Moreover, the whole structure began to shift towards State Street and to stop this movement, a massive staircase (51 m in length) was added on the east side, supporting the facade. The outer walls of the capitol are made of white granite quarried in Hallwell , Maine , as well as marble quarried by prisoners at Sing Sing Prison . The height of the building was 67 m. Through underground tunnels it is connected to the complex of administrative buildings of the Empire State Plaza and the Alfred Smith Building [7] .

Initially, the capitol building had two large frescoes by Boston artist William Morris Hunt . The first work was called The Flight of Night , the second was The Discoverer , both about 45 meters in length. However, they were closed when the vaulted ceiling was unstable and had to be lowered below the frescoes. A little earlier, these works suffered from moisture and began to delaminate. Due to funding problems, further wall painting was canceled [8] .
