Biography

Felicia [9] Albanese was born in Bari in the family of an Italian-American businessman, studied with Emanuel De Rosa in Bari and with Giuseppina Baldassare-Tedeschi in Milan .

In 1933, Albanese won first place in the Italian government-sponsored vocal competition of 300 participants.

She made her debut in 1934 in Milan, replacing the performer in the Cio-chio-san part in Puccini ’s opera Madame Butterfly , who did not show up for the performance — this part became the most famous for Albanese: for 40 years she sang it more than 300 times.

The first five years of her career she sang in theaters of La Scala , Covent Garden , the Roman Opera , having won great success in Italy, France and England in the second half of the 1930s .

After coming to power, Mussolini fled to Portugal in 1939 and, boarding a ship bound for the United States , the opera debuted at the Metropolitan on February 9, 1940 in the party Cio Cio-san. Her creative fate was associated with this scene over the next 26 years: Albanese was occupied in 17 opera parties, a total of 427 performances.

In 1966, as a result of a conflict with the director of the opera, Albanese moved to the San Francisco Opera House, where she performed for another 20 seasons (22 parts, 120 plays).

In 1970, Albanese gave her last concert (Carnegie Hall) [10] .

Back in 1987, Licia Albanese sang on the stage of the Theater under the stars in Houston - though not in the opera, but in the musical .

In 1945, Albanese accepted US citizenship.

In 1974, Licia Albanese founded a foundation to support young singers, which bears her name and the name Giacomo Puccini, in whose operas the Albanese shone ( English The Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation ). In 1995, the singer was awarded the United States National Medal in the Arts .

In 2000, she received the Handel Medallion Award from Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, the highest honor given by New York City for her contribution to the city’s cultural life.

For his contribution to the recording industry on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a personalized Star of the singer No. 6671 was opened, which is located on Hollywood Boulevard.

Died in New York on August 15, 2014
