The Jewish cemetery in Oberöwisheim ( German: Jüdischer Friedhof Oberöwisheim ) is one of the surviving Jewish cemeteries in the north of the German state of Baden-Württemberg , located in the former village of Oberöwismheim , which has now become an urban area of the city of Kreichtal . Created in the 17th century and is a protected cultural monument.
History
Since Jews were not allowed to bury their dead in Christian cemeteries in Craichgau , funeral rites were held at the Jewish cemetery in Speyer (until 1435), and then at the Jewish cemetery in Worms . The Jewish cemetery in Oberowisheim was opened around 1629 on the steep slope of Reimenhälden , where the area was too difficult to use for agriculture. The cemetery was under the auspices of several Jewish communities in Craichgau. The second oldest Jewish cemetery in Craichgau in the 2nd half of the 17th century was the cemetery in Waibstadt . Gradually, other Jewish cemeteries were also created, for example, in Flehingen (1688), Eichtersheim (1781), Eppingen (1819), Michelfeld (1868), Berwangen (until 1877) ), Bad Rappenau (1881), Ittlingen (1887), Melenheim (1896) and Sinsheim (1890). In the last decades of his appointment, the cemetery in Oberjövisheim served only as a burial place for the Jewish communities of Menzingen, Münzesheim and Odenheim.
Area
The area of the Jewish cemetery is 91.35 macaws (9135 m² ). It has 492 graves from 1735 to 1938.
