Blues Funeral is the seventh solo album by American rock musician Mark Lanegan , released in 2012. The name translates as “Funeral Blues” and is a kind of brief description of the style of the album.

Content

Creation History

After the release of the album Bubblegum, Lanegan left his solo career for a long time, focusing on third-party projects. Among these projects, it is worth noting the cooperation with Isobel Campbell , which resulted in three full-fledged studio albums. Just during a tour in support of the third Hawk album, Mark began to compose songs for his new independent work.

The recording of the album started in early 2011, Lanegan attracted his colleagues: Greg Dulley , Allen Johannes and Jack Irons . The sound of the album is similar to Bubblegum , but at the same time demonstrates significant development. In an interview with The Quietus magazine, the musician said that he uses much more elements of various music in the new album than in the previous ones, so this album is something more than the records made earlier. ^[1] Among others, Mark noted the influence of the albums: Miami by The Gun Club , Closer Joy Division and Country Life Roxy Music .

Criticism Reviews

The first single from Blues Funeral - “The Gravedigger's Song” was released at the end of 2011, and about a month later the whole album was released. He received many positive reviews from professional critics. Mojo 's Keith Cameron rated the album 5 out of 5 stars and called it "instant classic." ^[2] Tom Hughes of The Guardian described the album as "gloomy, blues rock" and noted "Lanegan's wonderful, gravelly voice." ^[3] Andie Gill of The Independent stated that Blues Funeral “boasts a rare consistency between lyrical themes and musical appeals” and also gave the album a full 5 stars. ^[4] On the Metacritic website , the album has 75 points out of 100, noting "overall positive reviews." ^[five]
