Botanical Description
Representatives of the family are parasitic plants that exist entirely due to host plants. They cannot photosynthesize , since chlorophyll is absent in their cells. They get all the necessary substances from the host plant, to which they are attached using suction cups - haustorium . Real roots are missing. What is usually mistaken for leaves is , in fact, bracts of inflorescences, and real leaves are greatly reduced and are located in whorls.
Among the representatives of the family there are both monoecious and dioecious plants . The flowers are collected in racemose , sometimes capitate, inflorescences . Unisexual flowers are small or medium in size, have radial symmetry. In some species, they have an unpleasant odor. The perianth is tubular and consists of merged sepals ; petals are absent. Male flowers contain 8, or, less commonly, 100 fertile stamens ; carpels in female flowers are hardly noticeable. Pollen grains have 2 or 3, rarely 4 holes. Female flowers have a lower ovary , and the number of ovaries is equal to the number of carpels .
Pollinating flowers of ants or birds .
As a result of fertilization , a large number of berries with many seeds are formed. Tiny seeds do not contain endosperm , and the embryo is in a rudimentary state.
Systematic position
Two species of the family were previously considered as part of the Rafflesiaceae family ( lat. Rafflesiaceae ), of the order Malpighiaceae ( lat. Malpighiales ). When they were separated into an independent family, then at first it was also attributed to malpigotsvetnymi , but later they were attributed to malvotsvetnymi .

According to the database of The Plant List (as of July 2016), the family includes 2 genera and 12 species [2] :
