Biography
Walter Ausendorfer was born on April 18, 1939 in the municipality of Tires , Trentino-Alto Adige region . He began to actively engage in sledding in the late 1950s, he was soon selected for the national team and, together with Zygisfredo Mayr, began to take part in major international competitions, showing rather good results.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Ausendorfer won the right to defend the honor of the country at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , where luge for the first time entered the official program. He participated in two disciplines at once, while in single sleighs he finished only sixteenth, and in double ones he came to finish third and won, respectively, a bronze medal. Since the competition in the national team at that time sharply increased, he soon decided to end the career of a professional athlete, giving way to young Italian sleigh riders.
