Life and creativity
The first drawing lessons he received from his father, Gerrit Gerrits Kuyp . In 1617, Jacob Kuipe enters the Dordrecht Artists Guild of St.. Luke . In the same year, he received his first major order for the creation of portraits of masters of the Dutch Mint, after which for many years he painted portraits of noble and famous dordrehtsevs. Particularly successful were his children's portraits depicting the "object" in full size against the background of a distant landscape and with a toy or a small pet (kitten, puppy, chickens, etc.). In 1618, Coype married Erken van Copen from Utrecht, and in 1620 they had a son, Albert , who also later became a famous artist.
Around 1627, Jacob Cheipe fell under the creative influence of the so-called Utrecht caravaggists , artists who worked in the technique of playing light and shadow of the famous Italian master Caravaggio . According to the collection of biographies of Dutch artists Arnold Houbraken , Keipe continued his artistic education in the workshop of Abraham Blumart , one of the largest representatives of this Utrecht trend. This “Caravaggian” influence on Keipe’s work is most clearly manifested in the canvas “Two Knights Sitting at the Table” located in the St. Petersburg Hermitage .
Jacob Keipe was a prolific artist, in addition to magnificent portraits who left behind paintings on biblical and historical subjects, still lifes and landscapes (the latter are mostly the environs of his native city). The last dated canvas of Kuyp - “A boy with a flute and a glass of wine” - dates back to 1652. In the same year, the civil status of Erken as a “widow” is indicated in the city acts.
Among the students of Jacob Kuyp, his stepbrother Benjamin and son Albert, as well as the Dordrecht artists Ferdinand Bol (later the student of Rembrandt ) and Paulus Lesiré should be mentioned.
