Kelly has appeared in all major Beverly Hills 90210 spin-offs, including Melrose Place and 90210: The New Generation . She became the first actress of the original series to receive a role in the 2008 restart. Compared with other actors in the show, appeared in the largest number of episodes and is the main character of the original series.

Garth’s work on the character was recognized by many critics and colleagues of the actress, including Jason Priestley [3] , Grant Shaw [4] and Sarah Foster [5] . In 1995, an article in the TV Guide magazine, written by Mary Murphy, said: "Her signature role - the sensual and sexy martyr Kelly Taylor - became the essence of teenage anger and gave a huge number of fans" [2] . In a 2009 article, Nelly Andreeva of The Hollywood Reporter called the character “a vibrant creation of Beverly Hills atmosphere” [6] .

Appearance

Throughout the episode's release episode, Kelly has become one of the controversial characters. In the first episodes aired in 1990, she was presented quite stereotypically - as a rich, spoiled girl from Beverly Hills, who first of all appreciated her appearance and material well-being. But as the plot develops, the character has become more multifaceted [1] .

For the first time, the reasons for this behavior were revealed in the seventh episode of the first season entitled “Perfect Mom” [7] , when it turns out that Kelly is very stressed and the problems associated with her mother’s alcohol and drug addiction Jackie - the Walsh family and Andrea Zuckerman realized that she was amazing a man sees how she is trying to deal with these problems. From the episode “Slumber Party” [8] it becomes known that her first sexual experience was painful when everything happened against her will with a guy who invited her on a date - then the girl was in junior high school. It becomes obvious that Kelly copes with a large number of problems that not everyone faces - soon Kelly and Andrea become close friends. When Andrea became pregnant in the fourth season, Kelly became the person who was able to convince her friend not to have an abortion [9] .

Development

Toward the end of season two, Kelly meets a young man named Jake Hanson, a little older than her. Although the girl's age pushed him away, he admitted that he was attracted to her heart and kindness. This storyline was completed in the pilot episodes of the series "Melrose Place" [10] . After a short summer affair with Dylan Mackay, the boyfriend of her best friend Brenda Walsh, Kelly decided to abandon Dylan and her personal happiness so as not to hurt her friend [11] . In the third season, the heroine again experienced a difficult period - experiencing romantic feelings for Dylan and guilt towards Brenda, the girl tries to avoid both of them. Even during an open relationship with Dylan, Kelly was incredibly worried about a broken relationship with Brenda [12] .

Around the same time, Kelly had a sister, Eirin, when Jackie married again, and soon her home was put up for sale. Then Kelly began to feel dissatisfaction with her figure, and abused diet pills, which led to exhaustion - as a result, on her birthday, the girl was in the hospital [13] . The appearance of the heroine also played an important role in the development of the character - she received the title of “Queen of Spring” during dances in the first season, and classmates voted for her as the most beautiful girl in the graduating class. Kelly knows that she is beautiful, but, basically, the girl perceives this as a hindrance in communicating with people - she believed that no one took her seriously, especially when Dylan let Andrea read his manuscript, and not her. Kelly had complexes, she was sure that people were friends with her solely because of her beauty [14] .

Darren Star has repeatedly spoken out about changes in the character [15] . In the audio commentary for the Spring Dance episode, he also noted the first manifestations of Kelly’s attraction to Brandon Walsh [16] , when the girl used the Queen’s title to attract the boy’s attention, while in the fourth season the girl was able to show her affection for Brandon in more soft and gentle form [17] , which made a great impression on the young man. It is also worth noting that in the series “Melrose Place” she asks Jake: “Do you think I'm beautiful?”, Which contrasts with the behavior in later episodes when the girl wanted to be appreciated for her inner qualities [14] . These changes played an important role some time later, when the girl managed to conquer Brandon. The performer of the role, actress Jenny Garth , admits that she simply hated her heroine: "She is so one-sided!" Jenny was particularly annoyed at how much Kelly boasts of a nose surgery in the first episode of the show. Later, the actress said that she changed her attitude towards Kelly for the better.

Popularity growth

Character development also led to the career of the actress. In a 1995 TV Guide article, it was stated that the producers decided to make the character of Garth central, and, according to the creators, “there is no doubt that she will succeed - so strong is faith in Jenny” [2] . As a result, the promotion led to the replacement of Brenda by Kelly as the main female character of the show, creating new, “more interesting storylines” [2] . An anonymous source claims that this decision was the stumbling block in the relationship between Jenny Garth and Shannen Doherty, who played Brenda Walsh [2] . Be that as it may, Garth commented on Doherty's departure in 1994 as follows: “During the filming, we really became friends, I will miss her” [18] .

For the first five years of filming the series, the screen time of the character has increased significantly [19] . Becoming a participant in such important events as the launch of the show spin-off, a love triangle first with Dylan and Brenda [20] , an affair with the main male character Brendon Walsh [21] , and later a love triangle with Brandon and Dylan [22] , popularity Kelly has grown significantly. Also, the girl was a participant in many other important events [23] [24] , which ultimately led to a change in the status of the heroine in the show [1] .

Also, in addition to launching the first spin-off called Melrose Place, Kelly appeared in the show 90210: The New Generation, where Jenny Garth became the first actress of the original show to return to the sequel. [25] These appearances made Kelly the most important character in the entire franchise, marking the greatest number of appearances in the episodes and pilots of the series [26] [27] . Shannen Doherty, also starring in 90210: The New Generation, assured fans that as their characters, the actresses renewed their relationship with each other: “We became real friends, I adore her” [28] .

Later years

Over time, Kelly faced more adult problems, including cult entry [29] , possible death in a fire, and cocaine dependence [30] . The character also suffered from amnesia [31] ; she shot the man who raped her [32] ; unexpected pregnancy and miscarriage - as well as consequences that cast doubt on the possibility of having children in the future [33] . Overcoming these obstacles, Kelly was able to become a better person and help others [34] .

Donna Martin, played by Tori Spelling and Claire Arnold, played by Kathleen Robertson , were Kelly's best friends and neighbors. The heroine of Tiffany Thyssen - Valerie Malone, who appeared as a replacement for Brenda Walsh - became Kelly’s main rival, but not long before Thyssen left the show, the heroines of the actresses finally found a common language [35] .

Kelly's life had two main romantic affections: Brandon Walsh, played by Jason Priestley , and Dylan Mackay, played by Luke Perry . In the fifth season, the heroine was forced to make a choice between the two men, but in the end she refused both of them. In any case, in the seventh season, she realizes that she loves Brandon and at the end of the eighth season the young people should have a wedding [36] . However, both heroes realized that they were not ready for this, which led to the departure of Brandon, who decided to devote himself to a journalistic career in Washington [37] . After Priestley left, the actress became the highest paid in the show. At the end of the series, Kelly begins an affair with Dylan again, and the heroine also organizes a private PR firm.

Melrose Place

In 1992, Melrose Place began to air - the first spin-off of the series, also created by Darren Star . Jenny Garth appears in the first few episodes to connect the new show with Beverly Hills, 90210, as one of the main characters in the series is Jake Hanson (played by actor Grant Shaw), an acquaintance of Dylan, with whom Kelly had in the final of the second season the romance began.

In the first episodes of Melrose Place, their romance is shown in more detail, but it can be described as a “parting-reunion,” because Jake had a big problem with Kelly's age, despite the fact that he likes the girl. In the end, Jake adjusts everything so that Kelly believes that he cheated on her, and the girl leaves Jake [38] . In later episodes of both series, the characters' novel is periodically mentioned, although neither Kelly nor Jake appear in the Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210 , respectively.

90210: The New Generation

In 2008, Kelly returned to the TV series " 90210: The New Generation " - now the woman works as a psychologist at the walls of her native school in West Beverly Hills. Soon, viewers will learn that during this time, Kelly received a degree and gave birth to Sammy's son from Dylan Mackay. Soon the couple broke up. In addition, it turns out that as a child, Harry Wilson - the new principal of the school - was a neighbor and friend of Kelly [39] .

Kelly’s relationship with Jackie returned to those that were shown in the first episodes with her mother - being in a constant binge, Jackie practically does not follow his youngest teenage daughter Eirin, who became the main character of the spin-off [40] . From the series, viewers learn that Kelly resumed communication with Brenda Walsh, but past grievances again become a stumbling block when Kelly suspects that Brenda still has feelings for Dylan. In addition, Brenda spends the night with Ryan Matthews, an English teacher [41] , with whom Kelly developed a romantic relationship. However, when Kelly discovers that Brenda will not be able to have children, she puts up with a friend [42] .

On the night of the party hosted by Donna Martin, who came to stay, Kelly meets Ryan in the store - the fortuneteller predicted their meeting ended in Ryan’s apartment [43] , but in the end, Ryan and Kelly decided not to continue the relationship, maintaining friendship.

In the second season, Kelly begins to spend more time with Harry, which causes jealousy of his wife Debbie. It soon becomes clear that the characters have romantic feelings for each other. However, Garth refused to participate in the storyline with an affair with a married man [44] . Upon learning of her mother's approaching death, Jackie from cancer, Kelly moves away from her, trying to protect Eirin, but later after talking with her sister, she forgives the woman for her difficult childhood and poor relationship with her alcoholic mother. Garth left the show at the end of the second season as a result of leadership changes - the new show runner Rebecca Sinclair decided to take a new direction in the development of the show [45] , and it did not include the appearance of the original characters, as well as less screen time for adult characters. Despite the fact that the heroine’s disappearance was not described in the plot of the new episodes, some heroes mention Kelly, noting that she still lives in Beverly Hills and takes care of Eirin [46] .

Criticism

In a 2009 article, Nelly Andreeva of The Hollywood Reporter noted that Kelly is an integral part of the franchise [6] . On November 24, 2008, SOAPnet hosted a marathon of the series of the classic show entitled Kelly's Leftovers in Love and Victory, dedicated to the romantic side of the heroine’s life [47] . In an article on the Melrose Place spin-off, Grant Shaw said he would like to return to the new series and become “something like Kelly Taylor for the 90210 franchise” [4] . When it became known that Jason Priestley will become the director of one of the episodes of the first season, the actor noted that he hopes to work with Garth on the set [3] . Once in the series, Sarah Foster said she was very nervous, as she was to act in common scenes with Jenny Garth, whom she loved so much when she watched the classic show [5] .

The actress’s biographical article on Yahoo! it is said that Jenny played “the popular frivolous girl Kelly, who has changed a lot over the years, which gave Garth the opportunity to improve his skills from season to season, showing incredible professional growth in front of viewers across America” [48] . In addition, many media believe that Kelly became the prototype of Naomi Clark - the character of the series " 90210: The New Generation " [49] [50] . On September 2, 2010, Reuters.com published an article about the original show containing Garth’s appeal via Twitter : “I incredibly love my colleagues, as well as the guys from the new show” [51] .
