History and Description
Bougival - the western suburbs of Paris (downstream of the Seine ) - in the second half of the 19th century it became a favorite vacation spot not only for Parisians. In the year of painting, Ivan Turgenev died there, who survived in Bougival the most beautiful years of his love [2] . Nowadays, Bougival is called the “cradle of impressionism," because, apart from Renoir, other prominent impressionists ( Monet , Sisley ) also worked in the open air .
In 1883, Renoir painted three paintings depicting dancing couples - “ Dance in the city ”, “Dance in Bougival” (ie, on the outskirts) and “ Dance in the village ”. These paintings, as it were, personify and bring closer to the viewer the plot used in the artist’s earlier painting “ The Ball at the Moulin de la Galette ” (1876) - but now instead of many dancing couples, the artist in each picture concentrates on one pair, writing it in all the details [ 3] [4] .
In the film “Dance at Bougival”, the woman is turned to face the viewer, while the upper part of the man’s face is covered by the fields of his straw hat, so that only the lower part with a beard and mustache is visible. In the background are the wooden tables of the cafe and the people sitting behind them. The background image is blurry, and this helps to convey the feeling of "spinning" around the dancers of the world.
The woman posing for the painting was Suzanne Valadon (real name Marie-Clementine Valadon), while Renoir's model, who later became a famous artist [3] [4] . Studies using X-ray radiography and infrared reflectography showed that initially a different, more complete woman posed for the picture - perhaps Alina Charigot ( French Aline Charigot ), the future wife of Renoir, who was the model for the picture “Dance in the Village” [ 5] .
The posing man was probably Paul Lot ( Paul Lhôte ) [6] - a close friend of Renoir, an adventurer, journalist and writer [7] . There is another version - that Renoir was posed by Hippolyte-Alphonse Fournaise , the son of the owner of the Furnes restaurant in Chatou [5] .
The painting passed through the hands of the famous Marchand Duran-Ruel and industrialist Francois Depot ( fr. ) Before being acquired for $ 150,000 by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1937 [1] . Two other paintings from the "dance" series remained in France; they are exhibited at the Paris Museum of Orsay .
At the request of Suzanne Valadon, Renoir also created a smaller version of this painting (88 × 47.4 cm in size), in which he further emphasized the similarity of the dancing woman’s face with Suzanne. This painting is currently in a private collection in the United States [8] .
