History
1979–1992: First Period
The Europe group was founded in 1979 in Stockholm under the name Force ; Joey Tempest, John Norum, Peter Olsson and Tony Reno [1] were included in her first squad. However, the first time they could not build their careers, because the record companies to which they sent their demos demanded to trim their hair and sing in Swedish instead of English. This led to the departure of Olsson [1] , whose place was later taken by Marcel Jacob. However, after three months, Olsson returned, not getting on with a new group [2] .
In 1982, thanks to the girl Tempest, the group got into the Rock-SM competition, which first performed under the name Europe and won; Joey Tempest and John Norum received separate awards for best vocalist and best guitarist, respectively, and the band got a contract with Hot Records [1] . A new name for the band was taken from one of the Deep Purple albums [3] . The debut self-titled album of the group was released in 1983. The album did not achieve great commercial success, did not receive any certification and took only 8 position in the Swedish chart, although the single Seven Doors Hotel was in the Top-10 in Japan. A year later, the second album Wings of Tomorrow followed, which, like the previous one, was not successful, although it attracted the attention of Columbia Records, which offered the group an international contract [1] .
Two years later, in May 1986, the third album, The Final Countdown , was released, glorifying the band for the whole world. The album was produced by Epic Records. He took the position in the top ten in 12 charts, received four certifications. Doug Stone of Allmusic called this album "one of the brightest and most prominent in history." The eponymous song became an international hit. However, after its release, John Norum decided to leave the group, disappointed in the dominance of synthesizers in the production [4] . In his place was invited Ki Marcello.
One year later, the album Out of This World was released , which repeated the success of its predecessor, took positions in 12 charts, and received five certifications. Prisoners in Paradise came out three years later, went gold in Sweden and hit 6 charts.
In 1992 the group broke up, although it was formally positioned as a break [5] ; vocalist Joey Tempest took up a solo career and the rest of the participants took part in other projects. The band contract with Epic Records has been terminated.
1998 - present Time: Revival
In 1999, the members of Europe teamed up for a short time to perform at the concert in Stockholm with the songs “The Final Countdown” and “Rock the Night”. After 4 years, an official statement was published in the press that the group was reunited and is working on a new album [6] . The band reunited with The Final Countdown : John Norum officially returned to the band as the only lead guitar player. Joey Tempest said in an interview that they wanted him back long ago [5] . Another reason was that Ki Marcello was too busy with his own projects and was not interested in playing in the style of Europe.
On September 22, 2004, a new CD, Start from the Dark , was released; on the same day, John Norum became a father. The album was sold in the amount of 600,000 copies, but in addition to the positions in the four charts did not achieve anything. Joey Tempest called the album a re-debut of the group, due to modernizing the sound and changing the genre. Like The Final Countdown, it was produced by Kevin Elson. Two years later, the Secret Society came out, hit the five charts.
On July 21, 2009, former bassist Marcel Jacob committed suicide at the age of 45 [7] .
The album Last Look at Eden , released in 2009, hit the 6 charts, received gold status in Sweden, was approved by critics and listeners [8] . In 2012, the album Bag of Bones was released [8] ; he became successful compared to his predecessors, hit the 10th charts and went gold in Sweden. March 2, 2015 released the tenth studio album War of Kings , which hit the charts in Sweden in second place.
