Several non-governmental organizations publish and assess the state of freedom in the world in accordance with their various definitions of this term, and rank countries in the following categories: free country, partially free or not free, based on political, economic rights and civil liberties .

The Democracy Index of the Economist Intelligence Unit is an assessment of democracy by country in the following categories: fully democratic , partially democratic , mixed regime and authoritarian regime . It is assumed that the assessment of a fully democratic , partially democratic and mixed regime is given to democratic states, while an authoritarian regime is given to dictatorships . The assessment is based on criteria such as civil liberties, the conduct of elections , freedom of the press , public participation in government, public opinion , the functioning of the state, corruption and stability.
