Troglodytes ( other Greek: τρωγλοδύτης - “living in a cave”, from τρώγλη - “cave, cavity” and δύειν - “penetrate”, “sink”) [1] - a tribe inhabiting, according to ancient authors ( Herodotus , Claudius Ptolemy , Agatharchid , Strabo , Diodorus of Sicily , Pliny , Tacitus , Josephus Flavius , etc.), either the western part of the Red Sea coast , or the extreme west (southwest) of the Arabian Peninsula . In Natural History , Pliny the Elder gives a description of the hermits who ate snakes and communicated screaming without a tongue. Strabo wrote that these people lived hunting, settled in caves, women and girls lived separately. Herodotus mentions that garamantes chariot hunted "cave Ethiopians" [2] . They prefer to build their houses in caves. In ancient times troglodytes had common wives and children [3] .
Traces of their stay were also found in Ethiopia , Turkey , Mali , on the slopes of the Caucasus and other countries [1] .
The etymology of the term is identical to the etymology of the word “ troglodyte ” in the meaning of “caveman”.
