Biography

Antonio Colonna was born in 1408 in the Papal States . He was the son of Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna , Count of Marcy, Count of Celano, Count of Alba and Sveva Caetani. Antonio was the nephew of Oddone Colonna .

Pope Martin V sent him in August 1418 to Naples to Queen Giovanna II of Naples , who appointed Antonio viceroy of the Duchy of Calabria . In 1424, he inherited the title and lands of the Principality of Salerno from Uncle Giordano Colonna.

In 1425 he married Giovannel Ruffo, Countess Catanzaro and Marquise Cortone, daughter of Nicolas, Count Catanzaro and Marguerite de Poitiers, Seniors Saint-Vallière. The young wife was killed a few days after the wedding. In the same year he again married Antonella Cantelmi, daughter of Nicola, Count of Popoli. Widowed, Antonio married for the third time in 1449, having married the Imperial of Colonna di Palestrina , the daughter of Stefano Colonna, the lord of Palestrina and Bassanelo [1] .

In 1425, the Pope gave his nephews - Antonio, Prospero and Odoardo to the eternal possession of the estate of Paliano and a number of other possessions. After the death of his benefactor in 1431, the Colonna brothers still continued to keep the treasury of the Holy See and own many castles in the Papal region in Marche and Lazio . The new Pope Eugene IV demanded that they immediately return all the fortresses and accused the brothers of appropriating church money, which were issued for the war against the Ottoman Turks . He was arrested by some representatives of the clan, and a conflict erupted between the pontiff and members of the Colonna family, accompanied by military action. On May 15, 1431, all three brothers were excommunicated by the Pope from the church, and on September 22 they were forced to conclude an agreement according to which the Colonna family paid 75,000 ducats, lost all the fortresses in the Papal region and the Principality of Salerno.

On September 12, 1432, Pope Eugene IV removed the excommunication from three brothers and granted them forgiveness, but already on October 9 he again excommunicated them from the church. In 1447, the new Pope Nicholas V returned to Antonio his estate in the Papal States. In December 1458, Pope Pius II appointed him prefect of Rome , and as such the next year he accompanied the pontiff to the Cathedral in Mantua , along with his cardinal brother Prospero Colonna . In January 1460, the Senate of Venice granted three brothers the hereditary title of the Venetian patricians.

Antonio Colonna died on February 25, 1472 in Genazzano , in the Papal States.
