Geography
It originates on Mount Egual , in the south of the Cévennes massif . It flows through the department of Gard , then crosses the Herault department from north to south, to which it gives its name, and flows into the Mediterranean Sea near the city of Agde .
Hydrology
The annual water consumption is more than 1.3 billion tons or 43.7 m³ / s with a total basin area of 2,550 km², which is 543 liters per square meter area. For example, the Oise basin gives about 240 liters, despite the fact that it is considered rainy. The difficulty lies in the fact that the flow of water in the river is extremely irregular - from 9 (in August) to 84 (in February) m³ / s.
Flash floods, often caused by precipitation in the foothills of the Égual massif, can exceed 1500 m³ / s. To regulate the flow, dams were built on the Salagu River (in Clermont-l'Eroux ) and on the Olivet River (in Velant ).
