RangeThe genus is widespread mainly in the tropics and subtropics , however, two species were found in temperate latitudes : Chionanthus retusus in East Asia and Chionanthus virginicus in eastern North America . Most tropical species are evergreen, and two species from the temperate zone are deciduous. Some botanists include only two deciduous species in the genus Chionanthus , and the evergreens are isolated as an independent genus Linociera , but there is no significant difference between them, except for the leaf life.
