Range

The genus is widespread mainly in the tropics and subtropics , however, two species were found in temperate latitudes : Chionanthus retusus in East Asia and Chionanthus virginicus in eastern North America . Most tropical species are evergreen, and two species from the temperate zone are deciduous. Some botanists include only two deciduous species in the genus Chionanthus , and the evergreens are isolated as an independent genus Linociera , but there is no significant difference between them, except for the leaf life.

Botanical Description

Chionanthus virginicus flowers

These are shrubs or trees of small and medium size, reaching 3-25 m in height. Leaves are opposite, simple. Flowers are collected in cirrus panicles . The corolla is divided into 4 thin lobes, they are white, pale yellow or pinkish. Fruits are single-seeded drupes .
