Initially, the department was in Slutsk and was moved to Minsk on September 3, 1799 by decree on April 12, 1795.

On October 23, 2014, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, by separating it from the Minsk diocese, formed the Borisov , Slutsk and Molodechno dioceses. The boundaries of the Minsk diocese were limited to the city of Minsk and the Minsk region.
