Abyss (religion)

Abyss - in the religious and mythological worldview gloomy other world.

In Christianity

In the Slavic translation of the Bible of the abyss, chaos is indicated, which was before the creation of the world ( Genesis 1: 2 ). In the book of Job, the abyss is compared with the water element, since it is indicated that its surface can freeze ( Job 38:30 ). In the psalms of David, the abyss is described as the space around the earth ( Psalm 103: 8 ), which is characterized by the absence of light ( Psalm 87: 7 ). The book of Revelation further mentions the “abyss of the abyss” ( Rev. 9: 3 ), from which smoke and locusts come out , led by the “angel of the abyss” ( Rev. 9:11 ) by Avaddon .

Basil the Great in the third conversation on Shestodnev with reference to the Psalms ( Psalm 148: 7 ) mentions that the abyss "is not recognized as worthy of rejection, but is included in the general liquidation of the creature" [1]

In the Tale of Bygone Years, in the story of a pagan rebellion in Rostov, the abyss confronts heaven and is described as the abode of demons (pandemonium) and the last refuge of the souls of the dead ( hell , the underworld , nav ).

In Islam

The Qur'anic term haviya (“pit, abyss”) comes from the verb hava , yahvi (“fall”) and is usually understood as one of the names of hell ( jahannam ). This term is found in Sura al-Kariya ("The Great Disaster"), which describes the catastrophic events of the apocalypse [2] and the weighing of human affairs on the Day of Judgment [3] [4] .

In philosophy

L. N. Gumilyov in his work “ Ethnogenesis and the biosphere of the Earth ” defined the abyss as a space without a bottom and identified it with emptiness and vacuum - “the physical world that is not part of our real world” [5] . In the work on ancient philosophy, St. Petersburg scholars K. A. Sergeev and Ya. A. Slinin use the word “abyss” to translate the Greek word “choir” and define it as an “undifferentiated continuum” [6] .
