Creation History
Radomysl Castle was created during 2007-2011. Its foundation is the building of an old mill built in the city of Radomyshl in 1902. As it was established during the research conducted during the restoration of the old building, it was erected on the remains of the foundation of an older building. Since the district of the city where the mill building is located is called Papyrnya (translated from Ukrainian as “paper mill”), it was concluded that the famous Radomyshl paper mill , built between 1612 and 1615 , was located in this place before. by order of the archimandrite of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Elisha Pletenetskiy (between 1550 and 1554-1624).
During the research conducted during the reconstruction and restoration work, the defensive nature of the structure where the Radomyshl paper mill was located was also established. In addition, it was found that the building was built on an underground granite rock that goes several meters deep into the ground.
During the restoration, interiors of the 17th-19th centuries were recreated.
In 2008-2009, a tower with a height of 35 m was completed on the main building, on which a bell was installed.
In 2009, a monument to the founder of the Radomyshl paper mill, Yelisey Pletenetskiy, was erected near the old building along the Myka River. This is the first and so far the only monument in Ukraine to this outstanding church figure and the first monument to a historical figure on the surface of the water.
The official opening of the historical and cultural complex "Radomysl Castle" took place on September 30, 2011 .
In August 2012, the new Mother of God Hall was first presented.
In November of that year, a restored paper production line was opened using technology from the 16th – 17th centuries.
In 2013, the chapel of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign on the Rainbow” was opened in the castle tower.
Currently, the historical and cultural complex "Radomysl Castle" includes:
- Museum of Ukrainian home icon
- Ritual Hall (which is also part of the Museum)
- Concert Hall (Fireplace or Mikhailovsky)
- Refectory
- A landscape park with two waterfalls, as well as islands, rare plants and ancient sculptures of the 17th-19th centuries.
- Monument to the founder of the Radomyshl paper mill, archimandrite of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra Elisha Pletenetskiy.
Since 2011, the historical and cultural complex "Radomysl Castle" has been part of the pan-European cultural project Via Regia , founded by the Council of Europe . The aim of the project is to promote the development of cultural exchange and tourism between European countries.
Components of the complex
Museum
The main attraction of the historical and cultural complex "Radomysl Castle" is the Museum of Ukrainian home icon . Its exposition and funds include more than 5000 images and sculptures - Orthodox , union and Catholic , created in the 16th – 20th centuries. in different parts of Ukraine - from Transcarpathia to Slobozhanshchina and from Severshchina to the Crimea . Among them are multi-meter home iconostases and tiny expensive icons, Cossack “arks” and Hutsul “folding”; icons painted on canvas, cast of metal and carved in wood.
Some icons retain traces of the times of Soviet militant atheism - shot through by bullets, with gouged out eyes, chopped down by sabers. Among the exhibits of the museum is a chest for grain made of decapitated icons; shutters from the image of Nicholas the Wonderworker cut in half.
The oldest is considered a unique stone icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker , made of slate stone. Her age has not yet been precisely determined, however, according to various experts who examined the icon (Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , Museum of the Volyn Icon ), her age ranges from the 15th-16th centuries (possibly a copy from an earlier original) to the end of the 12th century.
The exposition of the Museum is located in five rooms. One of them, the Ritual Hall, is at the same time the place where state registration of marriages takes place.
The museum funds of Radomysl Castle also have a rich collection of objects of ancient Ukrainian everyday life, among them are family chests, household utensils (irons, spinning wheels, wicker impermeable vessels for water, etc.), dugout boats.
Of particular interest is the collection of photographs of the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries. Among them are photo portraits from the studio of the famous Ukrainian photographer of Polish descent Alfred Fedetsky , the author of the first silent film shot in Ukraine.
Concert (Fireplace, Mikhailovsky) Hall
The concert hall of Radomysl Castle seats 150 spectators. The hall has a large fireplace with a sculpture of the Archangel Michael - hence its other two names. The height of the arches of the hall reaches 6 meters.
The hall hosts concerts of classical, vocal, chamber, folk and jazz music.
The concert hall of Radomysl Castle is the only hall in the world with a living source. Water enters the room through cracks in the rock.
Refectory
The refectory interior combines the features of the late Middle Ages and early Art Nouveau. A large castle stove with powerful traction serves both for cooking and as a fireplace.
The refectory of Radomysl Castle also plays the role of a museum exposition. On its walls are hung exact copies of ancient Western European maps of the XV — XVIII centuries, on which the lands of Ukraine , Europe and Asia are represented.
Landscape Park
The landscape park "Radomysl Castle" is a separate natural complex created on the principle of minimal human intervention in the natural environment. Its part is rocks and underground granite rocks that come to the surface.
Several underground sources were discovered in the park. Water from them is found to be potable.
The vast majority of trees and flowers growing in the park are rare species. Among them are unique varieties of iris, bred by Ukrainian breeder and doctor Igor Khoroshiy; pink and white water lilies, English park roses, magnolias, as well as the Red List of Ukraine water-chestnut Trapa rossica.
Various animals live in the castle landscape park - beavers , river otters , minks , water rats , as well as birds - starlings , storks , woodpeckers .
The territory of the park, like the castle building, is decorated with original sculptures of the 17th-19th centuries.
Monument to Elisha Pletenetsky
The sculpture was designed by Olga Bogomolets by Ukrainian sculptor Vladislav Volosenko. She portrays a monk who, bowing his head, is swimming in a boat. An open book lies in front of him, and in his hand is a candle burning day and night. The river symbolizes the fluidity of time, the boat - human life, the book - the knowledge and life experience of its predecessors, the candle - enlightenment and service to people.
