Biography
Teresa Chen Jinjie was born in 1875 in a Fen village in Hebei Province into a Catholic family.
In the years 1899-1900. in China, Christians were brutally persecuted during the Ihethuan rebellion . On July 5, 1900, Teresa Chen Jinjie rented a car with a group of ten family members and fled to a neighboring city to hide from the persecution of boxers. On the way, the car was detained near the village of Cao by rebels who ordered the fugitives to get out of the car. The rebels immediately killed the driver of the car and the mother of Teresa, and cut off the heads of two boys aged 12 and 17. The remaining fugitives, except Theresa Chen Jinjie and her sister, managed to escape. The rebels wanted to take Teresa Chen Jinjie and her younger sister Rosa Chen Aijie with them , but the girls resisted and then one of the boxers stabbed Teresa Chen Jinjie with a knife and wounded her sister.
Praise
Theresa Chen Jinjie was beatified on April 17, 1955 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on October 1, 2000 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 120 Chinese martyrs .
