Biography
Maria-Louise Rainer was born on April 23, 1959 in the city of Telfes im Stubai , the federal state of Tyrol . She began to actively engage in sledding in the early 1970s, she was soon selected for the national team and began to take part in various international competitions. Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck , where she subsequently finished sixteenth. At the 1979 World Cup in Königssee, Germany, she won the bronze medal of the women's singles program, while the next season she went to compete in the Olympics in Lake Placid , and she was extremely unsuccessful in her last fourth race, in which she could not reach the finish line.
In 1984, Rainer participated in the races of the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo and took sixth place, showing her best result in the Olympic programs. She had a very successful 1985/86 season, when at the end of all the cup stages she was placed in the world ranking of the strongest sleds on the first line and became, accordingly, the owner of the World Cup. She qualified for the 1988 Olympics in Calgary without any problems, planned to compete for medals here, but in the end she came to the finish line only fifteenth. The last major international start for her was the European Championship in Königssee, where she took bronze in the relay. Shortly after the end of these competitions, Maria-Louise Rainer decided to end the career of a professional athlete, giving way to young Italian sleigh riders.
Subsequently, she took the position of assistant coach in the Italian national team, and later coached the national team of Canada. She also managed to work as a manager at the 2006 Home Winter Olympics in Turin and for some time was a member of the International Luge Federation , organizing the stages of the Youth World Cup, now she is the FIL coordinator and a member of the technical committee [2] .
