Name Origin
The name Verkhne-Nazemskaya was most likely due to the fact that manure (land) was abundantly brought here from the stables in the nearby Konyushennaya Sloboda . The first part of the name Verkhne- by analogy with the neighboring Verkhne-Voznesenskaya street indicates that the street rose to the Ascension Hill , that is, it went in the north-south direction [1] .
History
The street arose after the expansion of the Yekaterinburg fortress (not earlier than 1774-1778) on a site along the eastern line of old fortifications (between the modern streets of Karl-Liebknecht and Turgenev ), and could initially be used as a place for a landfill. After the demolition of the fortifications and the beginning of the restructuring of the city according to the master plan of 1804 with its requirements for the construction of geometrically correct quarters, Verkhne-Nazemskaya Street was built up with the estates of the townspeople [1] .
