The joint Mongolian-Russian enterprise mining and processing plant "Erdenet" [4] ( Mong. "Erdenet" дildver ) [5] [6] , abbr. JV GOK Erdenet is a mining and processing enterprise in the city of Erdenet in Mongolia . It is a limited liability company (COO) [7] [8] and one of the largest mining companies in Asia . [9] [10]

History
Geological exploration of the Erdenetiin-ovoo deposit began in the late 1950s, and the enterprise was established in 1974 .
Timeline
Soviet period
In 1974, the company was founded.
On June 11, 1976, the first explosion was made and overburden work began .
In 1976, the first concentrate was developed [11] .
In 1978, the first phase of a mining and processing enterprise was put into operation with a capacity of 4 million tons of ore per year [12] .
In 1980, the second stage of the enterprise was put into operation with a production and processing capacity of 8 million tons of ore per year [13] .
In 1981, the fourth stage of the enterprise was put into operation, the ore mining and processing capacity amounted to 16 million tons per year. The fifth stage of the mining and processing enterprise was commissioned, the capacity was increased to 20 million tons of ore mining and processing per year. After the enrichment plant was commissioned, 1 million tons of copper were produced. [fourteen]
Post-Soviet period
In 1996, Caterpillar U.S. dump trucks and BelAZ-7512 dump trucks of the Belarusian Automobile Plant with a 120 ton lifting capacity, which replaced BelAZ-548 dump trucks with a 40 ton lifting capacity, began to be used for ore and overburden mining. [15] .
Since 1997, the production of copper concentrate containing 2 million tons of copper [16] .
In 2001, with the complete completion of the technical upgrade of the first twin section, its processing capacity reached 10 million tons of ore per year.
In 2002, the BelAZ-75145 dump truck with a lifting capacity of 130 tons was launched at the Motor Transport Enterprise.
In 2003, Erdenet planned to produce about 485,000 copper concentrate [17] .
Purchase of Erdenet Metal CJSC
In 2007, the enterprise producing steel balls Erdenet Metal was transferred to the possession of the Erdenet mining and processing plant. The share of the Mongolian side in Erdenet Metal was 51 percent, Swiss investors - 49 percent. Having bought Swiss shares, the GOK acquired another workshop [18] . Director of Erdenet Metal B. Baatarsukh said:

In 2008, work began on the creation of an enterprise at Erdenet GOK for the processing of copper concentrate with a production capacity of 50-70 thousand tons of refined copper per year, with an estimated start of operation in 2010 [20] .
In 2009, Erdenet mined and processed the largest ore volume in the history of its operation over the course of 31 years - 26 million tons. [21]
In 2010, the management of the plant donated 800 million tugriks as assistance to cattle breeders of 12 aimaks, where the winter situation was especially difficult. General Director C. Hanzorig transferred to the head of the State Commission for Emergency Situations M. Enkhbold a one-day wage of workers - 150 million Tugriks. The company's management also decided to allocate 50 million tugriks to the provinces in the disaster zone [22] The factory processed 25 million 650 thousand tons of ore. In addition, the old equipment was replaced with new and modern technologies were introduced.
Enterprise Production Structure
Copper-molybdenum concentrate is produced from the ore mined in the open pit at this ore deposit at the processing plant . [23] The proven reserves of the Erdenetiin-ovoo deposit are estimated to last until 2060. [24]
The company consists of four main divisions:
- POP (open pit mine), where ore is mined ;
- ATP (motor transport company), mainly engaged in the transportation of ore to a concentration plant;
- Processing plant ( processing plant ), where the ore mined in the quarry is enriched and the final products of the enterprise are produced: copper and molybdenum concentrate;
- RMZ (mechanical repair plant) serving all the main production units of the enterprise.
In addition, the enterprise structure includes a heat shop, an energy shop, an electric shop, a process automation and computer shop [25] , which ensure uninterrupted operation of the main technological units [26] , an exploration batch [27] , and a railway shop [28] .
Erdenet GOK has several subsidiaries, which are also mainly related to the activities of the main enterprise:
- KOO RSC (repair and construction workshop), which is the main construction organization for the enterprise and the city of Erdenet [29] ;
- Erdmin LLC - a joint venture of Erdenet GOK and the American company RCM , which is an experienced enterprise for the production of pure cathode copper from off-balance sheet and storage ore dumps of Erdenet LLC [30] ;
- Erdsulzh LLC is an enterprise producing clothes, mainly work clothes for employees of the enterprise [31] .
Also, since 2007, owns the enterprise for the production of steel balls Erdenet Metal. [32]
The composition of workers and specialists traditionally from the very beginning of the enterprise includes representatives of the founding countries. Until 1991, workers and specialists of the MPR and the USSR worked at the enterprise. After 1991, workers and specialists representing the Mongolian and Russian sides worked at the enterprise. In addition to the citizens of Mongolia, the company from the Russian side employs citizens of Russia , Kazakhstan , Ukraine , Armenia , Uzbekistan , Azerbaijan , Belarus and Kyrgyzstan . [33]

Collaborates with some other large mining companies, including MMC Norilsk Nickel , which has its own raw material base, and the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company , which is experiencing a shortage of copper raw materials. [36]
Owners and management
Initially, the share of the Mongolian side in the authorized capital of the joint venture was 49%, and the USSR - 51%. As a result of the agreement of 1992, it became the opposite. At the end of 2010, nominally:
- 51% of the company is owned by Mongolia ;
- 49% of the plant’s shares are owned by Russia [37] .
Since the end of 2015, the share of Russia's participation in the Erdenet joint venture has been under the control of the Russian state corporation Rostec [38] .
Since 2007, Mongolia has claimed 62% of the plant’s shares [39] . In 2016, Rostec signed an agreement to sell a 49% stake in the Mongolian Copper Company to a 49% stake in the Erdenet and Mongolrostsvetmet joint Russian-Mongolian mining enterprises [40] . Thus, the plant became completely Mongolian.

Enterprise Performance
Currently, the mining and processing plant produces 26 million tons of ore per year [44] (25 million tons [45] for 2007 ) and produces 530,000 tons of copper concentrate and about 3,000 tons of molybdenum concentrate, which is exported to many countries : to Russia , Kazakhstan , Japan , China , USA, South Korea, Switzerland [11] .
The share of the enterprise in Mongolia's GDP is 13.5% [46] [47] . The company employs more than 6 thousand people. [48]

- Erdenet GOK was named the best business unit at the London International Business Assembly International Award Ceremony. In addition, the director of the enterprise C. Hanzorig was awarded the prize of the best manager of 2010 [50] .
Composition and number of employees at the plant
1999-2000
The composition of the workers at the plant is quite multinational.
As of January 1, 2000, the total number of employees of the enterprise amounted to 6604 people, of which 5488 people represent Mongolia, and 1072 people represent the CIS side, moreover: from Russia - 558 people (52.1%), Kazakhstan - 327 people (30.5% ), Ukraine - 162 people (15%), and the remaining 25 people (2.3%) are citizens of Armenia , Uzbekistan , Azerbaijan , Belarus and Kyrgyzstan .
In 1999, 192 people took part in the management of Erdenet GOK, of which 153 people (79.7%) represented Mongolia, 39 people (20.3%) on the Russian side; and in 2000 - 197 people, of which the Mongols - 156 people (79.2%), Russians - 41 people (20.8%) [51] .
2001
As of January 1, 2001, the number of workers was 6,518 people, including 5,485 people from Mongolia, and 1,033 people (15.8%) from Russia and the CIS, including 542 people from Russia (52, 5%), Kazakhstan - 311 (30.1%), Ukraine - 155 (15.0%) and 25 people (2.4%) are citizens of Armenia , Uzbekistan , Azerbaijan , Belarus and Kyrgyzstan . Enterprise Social Infrastructure
Sports complex
The owner of the sports complex in Erdenet is also Erdenet. The complex consists of several units: Hilam Swimming Pool (capacity 45 people), Large Sports Hall (capacity 200 people), Hangard Stadium (capacity 2000 people), Sarkhia ski resort [53] [54] (can serve 300 people per hour), hockey rink, courts for athletics, tennis, wrestling halls, boxing, judo, gymnastics, table tennis, bodybuilding, chess, weightlifting, billiards, hotel, sauna, clinical and control room, chemical bacteriological laboratory, relevant international Nome standard.
More than 3,000 people are involved in 25 sports and participate in local, regional and international tournaments in the complex. Athletes involved in the complex won a total of 2500 medals. 2 honored trainers, 3 honored athletes, 18 international-class masters and 81 sports masters were brought up in the sports complex. [55]

- On the territory of the mining and processing plant is planned to build a park-museum "Our enterprise". [56] [57]
Geography
The quarry of the enterprise is located 340 km northwest of the country's capital Ulan Bator , 180 km west of the city of Darkhan , 60 km north of the center of the Bulgan aimak, as well as 140 km from the state border of the Russian Federation and 6 km from Erdenet city center. The company has railway connections with the East Siberian railway network through the city of Naushki and with the Chinese railway network through Eren-Hot . [58]
