Description
White-headed zonotrichia: young individual in winter plumage
The white-headed zonotrichia is approximately 18 cm long and has black and white stripes at the top of the head. The rest of the head, as well as the chest is gray, the plumage of the upper body with brown streaks. The birds have a long brown tail. The beak is either pink or yellow. These birds can be easily confused with white-necked zonotrichia , however, they do not have a yellowish eyebrow and white spot on the neck.
DistributionThe species is common in northern Canada and the western United States.
NutritionA white-headed zonotrichia searches for insects and seeds on the ground in the forest, sometimes hunting for insects in flight. In winter, birds search for food together in small flocks.
ReproductionThe white-headed zonotrichia nests in shrubs, hedges and forest thickets. In a nest located on the ground or on the ground under the bushes, birds lay 3-5 gray- or greenish-blue eggs with brown specks.
