Biography
Nikolai Bykov was born in 1920 in the village of Savyolovo (now Firovsky District, Tver Region ) into a peasant family. He graduated from junior high school. In 1936 he moved to Leningrad , where he was a worker at a shipyard. In 1940, Bykov entered the military aviation school. In 1943 he joined the CPSU (b) .
World War II
Since April of that year - on the fronts of World War II. Participated in battles on the 3rd Ukrainian front , was wounded twice. He took part in the battles near Belgorod , the liberation of Donbass, Zaporozhye , the battle for the Dnieper . Conducted reconnaissance and attack of enemy targets, including in difficult meteorological conditions. By March 1944, Senior Lieutenant Mykola Bykov was deputy squadron commander of the 237th assault air regiment of the 305th assault air division of the 9th mixed air corps of the 17th air army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front [1] .
By March 1, 1944, Bykov made 89 sorties, took part in 13 air battles with German fighters, personally destroyed 87 vehicles with cargo and manpower, 19 tanks , 12 bunkers , 23 railway cars, 21 artillery pieces, 2 bombers at the airport and a large number of other equipment. None of Bykov’s sorties were unsuccessful [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 1, 1944, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command to destroy the enemy’s manpower and equipment and courage and heroism shown”, Senior Lieutenant Nikolai Bykov was awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the medal “ Golden Star ” under number 3963 [1] .
During an air battle in the Baltic, Bykov was seriously wounded, from whom he died on January 3, 1945 . He was buried in a mass grave in the Latvian city of Jelgava [1] .
Rewards
He was also awarded two orders of the Red Banner , orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and the Red Star , as well as a number of medals [1] .
