Biography
Paul Baudry was born November 7, 1828 in La Roche-sur-Yon in the family of a shoemaker . At 16, thanks to a municipal scholarship, he entered the National Higher School of Fine Arts , where he studied under the supervision of Martin Michel Drollen [1] .
In 1850, Baudry received the main Roman Prize for the painting "Zenobia Found by Shepherds on the Bank of Arax." The talent of the painter was manifested in a strict academic manner, but he had not yet found his personality. During his stay in Italy, he was inspired by Italian art and especially the mannerism of Correggio . This influence was manifested in two of his canvases, which he exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857, “Vestal Sacrifice” and “Child”, bought by Luxembourg. His other paintings “Leda”, “Saint Jean Baptiste” and “Portrait of Belle”, exhibited in the same year, received the first prize. In the early period, Baudry preferred mythological or imaginary subjects. His picture of this period “ Pearl and the Wave ” (1862) is best known. Only once did he try himself in the historical genre (Charlotte Corde after the Murder of Marat, 1861). In addition, Baudry painted portraits of famous people of his time ( Francois Guizot , Charles Garnier , Edmond Aboux ).
The pinnacle of the painter’s skill, showing his imagination and highly artistic gift, was his frescoes in the building of the Court of Cassation in Paris, in the Chantilly Palace, in some private estates and especially in the Opera Garnier building. More than 30 works, including compositions, were written by Baudry over a period of ten years. Beaudry was a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts , taking the place of Jean-Victor Schnitz (1787-1870).
Paul Baudry was the author of the 100-franc note, issued in 1882.
Baudry died on January 17, 1886 in Paris, was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery . The monument on the artist’s grave was made by the sculptor Paul Dubois and Antonin Mercier with the participation of brother Baudry, the architect.
