Biography
He was born on November 2, 1911 in the village of Galkovsky [1] (now in the city of Krivoy Rog ) in a peasant family. Received primary education, worked at the mine. In 1932, Bykov graduated from the evening working faculty. In 1933 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1938 he graduated from the Kiev Artillery School. With the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. He took part in the battles near Smolensk , in Ukraine . By May 1942, the senior lieutenant Ivan Bykov commanded the battery of the 32nd Guards Artillery Regiment of the 13th Guards Rifle Division of the 28th Army of the Southwestern Front . He distinguished himself during the Kharkov operation of 1942 [2] .
On May 14, 1942, in the vicinity of the village of Nepokryty (now Shestakovo ) in the Volchansky district of the Kharkiv region , Bykov’s battery positions were attacked by enemy tank and mechanized forces. In battle, the gunners managed to destroy about 10 enemy tanks and armored vehicles, forcing the German troops to abandon further offensive in this area. The next day, the enemy, regrouping the troops, again launched a powerful tank attack with more than 30 tanks. The battle lasted continuously for three hours. Bykov was wounded, but did not leave the battlefield, having risen himself to the gun instead of the dead gunner. In just two days of fighting, the battery destroyed 31 German tanks, never allowing the enemy to break through their defenses [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 2, 1942, for the "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard, senior lieutenant Ivan Bykov was awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the medal " Golden Star ” under number 845 [2] .
He took part in the Battle of Stalingrad and Kursk . In August 1943, Bykov’s division took part in the encirclement of a large enemy group during the counteroffensive of Soviet troops on the Kursk Bulge. On August 7, 1943, after artillery preparation, German tank and infantry forces tried to break out of the encirclement. The division of the guard of Major Ivan Bykov attacked them from the rear, forcing them to withdraw. During the next two counterattacks, Bykov was injured in the leg, but did not leave the battlefield. When the division ran out of ammunition, he raised still alive fighters in a counterattack. In this battle, the Bulls died. The actions of the division contributed to the failure of the attempts of the German troops to leave the encirclement. Bykov was buried in the village of Beryozovka, Borisov district (now the Belgorod region ) [2] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner (23/05/1943) [2] [3] .
