Biography

Vladimir Bykov was born in 1920 in the village of Bocharovka (now in the Stary Oskol city district of the Belgorod region ) into a peasant family. In 1938 he graduated from a medical school, after which he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1940 he graduated from the artillery school. In 1941 he joined the CPSU (b) ; since July of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By January 1945, Major Vladimir Bykov was deputy commander of the 439th anti-tank artillery regiment of the 13th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .

On January 29, 1945, Bykov, at the head of three regiment batteries, together with the advanced units of the army crossed the Oder in the area of ​​the settlement of Taksdorf , 6 kilometers south of the Polish city of Scinava and put forward their guns for direct fire. By the end of the first day of battery battles, 10 tanks , 4 armored personnel carriers , 12 vehicles, and several dozen enemy soldiers and officers were destroyed under the leadership of Bykov. On January 30, Bykov received two serious injuries, but he did not leave the battlefield, continuing to control the batteries. January 31 Bykov died in battle. He was buried at the site of battles [1] .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated April 10, 1945, Major Vladimir Bykov was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , Red Banner , Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 and 2 degrees. A street in Stary Oskol is named after Bykov [1] .
