The lake is stretched from north to south for more than 25 kilometers, the coast is heavily indented. There are more than 200 large and small islands in Velho.
Difference in depth to 42 meters (2004 study). The average depth is 9-10 meters. The bottom and shores are mostly sandy, sometimes silt.
The western and northern shores of the lake are populated. The southern and eastern coasts are difficult to access by road. The water in the lake is potable. There is no industry, there are no large agricultural producers either. The lake is covered with ice in late November - early December, is freed from ice in late April - early May.
Several small rivers flow into the lake. The natural runoff in the western part of the lake through the Yavon River is partially blocked by a dam, which is why the level of the lake is raised by several meters. Part of the drain of Lake Velho enters the Vyshnevolotsk water system through an artificial channel in the eastern part of the lake to the Libya River , Lake Shlino and River Shlin .
