Library and Society History
In 1889, at the initiative of A. D. Toropov and V. F. Freiman [2], the Moscow Bibliographic Circle appeared, in which at the time of its foundation there were 59 members, and by 1899 - 123 members, including D. D. Yazykov , V. Ya. Bryusov . In the charter, approved on July 31, 1890, the goal was “to compile and publish a complete systematic catalog of all Russian civil press books without exception, that is, published since 1708, and then compile catalogs of manuscripts, periodicals, church books, etc. . ". By 1891, a bibliographic instruction "A Method for Describing Books" was developed, published, in particular, in the journal "Bibliographer" . The task set required the development of a new bibliographic classification, although the need for its development at the beginning of the 20th century disappeared with the spread of the UDC system .
In 1893, the Circle raised the issue of printed library cards. Ya. G. Kvaskov December 1, 1892, in the report "Library cards with newly published books" (Reform of library science: library cards with newly published books / Ya. G. Kvaskov, Publisher of bookseller D. V. Baykov. - M. : Printing house V. A. Gattsuk (D. P. Chernyshevsky), 1893. - 16 pp.), Proposed to petition the government to establish by law a certain size of library cards and to print them with each new book [3] . However, this idea was realized only after 33 years.
In 1900, the Circle was transformed into the Russian Bibliographic Society with its inclusion in Moscow University [4] .
A prominent figure in society was B. S. Bodnarsky , whose theoretical work and many years of practical activity had a significant influence on the development of the science of the book.
One of the honorary members was A. M. Lovyagin , the author of numerous books on book science, who worked on the development of theoretical problems of book science, which he originally called bibliology and considered the equivalent of bibliography.
The circle and society were published by the journals “Book Science” (1894–1896) and “Bibliographic News” (1913–1927, 1929) [5] .
In 1910, after the death of Leo Tolstoy , a Tolstoy commission was formed to compile a bibliography of his works , which at the end of 1912 passed to the special Tolstoy society and museum that arose in Moscow.
In December 1911, after the Library Congress, a library science commission was established with a library technology museum attached to it. On the initiative of the commission, in 1913, library science courses were organized (the duration of study is three weeks). In mid-1916, the library science commission was transformed into an independent Russian Library Society [6] .
The Society organized the First All-Russian Bibliographic Congress in 1924: it participated in the Second All-Russian Bibliographic Congress in 1926.

- ↑ V.F. Freiman (1860-1905) - Moscow antiquarian and bibliographer. He began to compile the "General Systematic Catalog of Russian Books", but the grandiose work required collective work, for which a bibliographic circle was created. As a result, if by 1889 Freiman single-handedly prepared a card file containing 20,000 titles, then after a year of collective work the catalog grew to 66,000 entries (General bibliography: Textbook for high schools. - M.: MGUP Publishing House, 2000. - 588 s. . - ISBN 5-8122-0099-8 ). By the beginning of 1917, the catalog of the Russian printed book totaled more than 1/2 million records; however, in the fall of 1917, an artillery shell that fell into the left wing of the old building of Moscow University and precisely into the room where the catalog was stored, inflicted difficult damage on him, as a result of which he lost value as a reference device ( Mashkova M.V. History of Russian bibliography began XX century. (Until October 1917) - M., 1969).

However, it is documented that on December 19, 1929, the chairman of the Society, B. S. Bodnarsky, was invited by the "Scientific Department of the Glavnauka to Comrade Nikitin for negotiations on the survey of the bibliographic society" (the "survey" was actually liquidation).
