Biography

Born into a poor noble family. As a gymnasium student, in 1878 in Yasnaya Polyana , he taught the Greek language to the older children of Leo Tolstoy [1] . He graduated from the Tula Gymnasium , then, in 1884 - the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University , but devoted his whole life to collecting and studying books. By the end of the gymnasium course, according to Ulyaninsky’s own memoirs [2], his collection of books included 400 titles (there were no second-hand books among them then; the taste for old books came later, in Moscow). From 1886 until his death he was an active member of the Russian Bibliographic Society at Moscow University, and later became its chairman [3] . Resumed book collection in 1892

The library of D.V. Ulyaninsky, both in terms of the number of rare and rare editions, and in the preservation of copies, was one of the best Russian private collections of its time. Ulyaninsky compiled and published a complete bibliographic description of his own library, in which each edition is devoted to a kind of small bibliological study - the catalog “D. V. Ulyaninsky Library. Bibliographic description ”in 3 volumes (1912-1915). His collection included 4,400 volumes, including a particularly valuable section of Rossici devoted to Russia [4] .

In 1918, having lost the state place and apartment, and thereby the opportunity to save the collection, Ulyaninsky committed suicide; his entire library and collections of bookplates and portraits of Russian bibliophiles and bibliographers were purchased from the widow of the Rumyantsev Museum [5] .

He also owns a study: Among books and their friends. - Printing house “A. N. Ivanov and Co. °, 1903. - 145 p.

He was buried at Pyatnitsky cemetery .
