For the Board of Trustees , who was in charge of the affairs of the Educational House , the architect J. Velten builds a special building that was supposed to combine the functions of an educational institution and a pawnshop (to receive funds for the maintenance of this very institution). Previously, the Educational House was located near the Smolny Monastery , but due to the range and inconvenience of the location, it was decided to transfer it to the center. March 20, 1778 was followed by an order to adapt "in Millionnaya Street along the Red Canal, a stone house, former Life Guards Captain Prince Alexander of Georgia " [1] . Velten essentially built a new building. Construction is fast: in 1778-1779 the main work was completed. Already on June 17, 1779, orphans were transferred here, who settled in the upper floors of the house. The rest of the premises were occupied by the Lombard and the Loan Fund, which partly financed the educational institution and were established with it since 1772 .

The main facade was facing Millionnaya Street and the Red Canal . A little later, the complex included two more nearby houses, bought into the treasury from K. G. Razumovsky [2] . Together with the first construction, they formed a single complex of the Educational House, the plan of which is attached to the Betsky's treatise. Surviving floor plans can provide insight into the placement and designation of premises [3] .

Barracks

In 1797, the Petersburg Educational House was transferred to the former palace of Count K. G. Razumovsky at Moika . The building houses the Kexholm regiment barracks. In 1816, architect V.P. Stasov , creating barracks for the Pavlovsky regiment , somewhat rescheduled and “clothed” the existing buildings with a single facade, while maintaining the proportions and partially - the first tier of the Feltenovsky building.

Lenenergo

Since 1929, the building of the barracks was occupied by Lenenergo .

XXI century

In May 2010, the building was transferred under reconstruction to the hotel complex.

The building of the barracks of the Pavlovsky Life Guards Regiment was one of the first significant works of architect V. P. Stasov in St. Petersburg. Creating the building of Pavlovsk barracks, Stasov somewhat rescheduled and “clothed” the existing buildings with a single facade, keeping the proportions and partially - the first tier of the Felten's building, the rusticated wall of which is broken by an arcade of the first floor windows and preserved semi-circular semi-basement windows. The main divisions of the facade and the stepped increase of risalits towards the center survived. Instead of a four-column portico that unites the upper floors at Felten, in accordance with the Stasov project, a ten-column portico appeared with the same removal. Stasov adds gables on the brackets above the windows on the entire row of the second floor; the gable of the central part is reinforced by a massive attic. This monument of high classicism breathes harsh grandeur, refuting the conventional wisdom that the barracks are something dull, gray and monotonous. The construction of the barracks, designed for the Pavlovsky regiment, designed the gigantic town square, which served for military exercises, parades and parades.

In 1819, the regiment returned from Moscow to St. Petersburg and immediately moved into new barracks. In those years, above the attic of the building facing the Field of Mars was an inscription: " The barracks of the Life Guards Pavlovsky Regiment ."

For many years, the main facade of the Pavlovsk barracks served as a majestic backdrop for the military life of metropolitan St. Petersburg - in front of it there were parades, exercises, parades, as well as festive festivities.

Problems of preservation of the monument

City defenders have concerns that the investor wants to completely dismantle the interior of the building, leaving only the facade [4] .
