Description

Black lemur is from 39 to 45 cm long, the tail is much longer, its length is from 51 to 65 cm. Weight is from 1.8 to 2 kg. In animals, sexual dimorphism is expressed, male and female are colored differently. Males are painted in a monophonic black color, however, in sunlight their coat can have a tint from red-brown to dark brown. Bundles of hair are noticeable in their ears. The color of females on the back is brown to black-brown, the limbs are brownish, and the belly is light brown to pale gray. The head and muzzle are dark gray, long tufts of hair in the ears of females are white. Both sexes have a very long, fluffy tail. The eyes of these animals are yellow-orange, which distinguishes them from the closely related species Eulemur flavifrons .

Distribution

Black lemur lives only in the Sambirano region in the northwest of Madagascar , as well as on several nearby islands, such as Nosy Be and Nosy Comba . Their habitat is humid forests, however, they can also live in secondary forests .

Lifestyle

These primates are catemeral, which means that they do not have a predefined schedule of sleep and eating. In the afternoon, mainly in the early morning and evening, they are active, their degree of activity at night depends on the season and phase of the moon. In the rainy season, they are more active at night than during the drought period, and with a relatively full or full moon, their degree of activity also increases. These are arboreal animals that are held in the middle and upper crown of trees.

They live in groups of 2 to 15 (usually from 7 to 10) animals; the groups consist of approximately the same number of males and females and their common offspring. The group is managed by a dominant female. The area of the site, which may overlap with the territory of another group, is from 5 to 6 hectares.

Nutrition

Black lemur feeds mainly on ripe fruits, along with it also feeds on flowers, leaves, mushrooms and sometimes small animals such as insects and millipedes. Nutrition varies depending on the season; in the dry period, nectar plays an important role.

Reproduction

Mating takes place in April or May. At the end of the 125-day pregnancy period, the female gives birth during the period from late August to early October more often than one cub. First, the baby clings to the belly of the mother, later he rides on her back. At the age of 5 to 6 months, he is weaned from his mother. At the age of about 2 years, he becomes sexually mature.
