Biography

Born in a family castle in the family of Count Nicholas Esterhazy and his second wife, Baroness Cristina Nayar.

Paul was raised in a deeply religious spirit and studied at Jesuit institutes in Graz and Nagishombat . At an early age he discovered literary talents.

Vladislav, Pal’s elder brother and heir to a family fortune, was killed on August 16, 1652 in the battle against the Turks at Wesekee. After that, at the age of 17, Paul became the head of the Esterhazy clan of Galanta.

Prince Pal was known for complete devotion to the emperor, which distinguished him from other Hungarian magnates. He did not take part in the conspiracy of the magnates of 1670, nor in the rebellion of Rakoczy . For his loyalty he was kindly treated by the Habsburgs .

Family

Pal was married twice. He first married his niece, Countess Ursula Esterházy, the daughter of his brother Count Istvan and his wife Countess Erzhebet Turgio, on February 7, 1652 in Eisenstadt. This marriage, in particular, was concluded in order to prevent the division of property of the Esterhazy family. Pal with Ursula had nineteen children:

  • Miklos Antal Esterhazy (1655-1695);
  • Pal Esterhazy (1657-1664);
  • Catalina Esterhazy (1659-1664);

  • Adam Esterhazy (1680-1720).

After the death of his first wife, Pal married Eve, daughter of Count Istvan Tekeli and Maria Gilaffi. Pal and Eve had the following children:

  • Maria Theresa Anna Esterhazy (1684-1755);
  • Catalina Rosa Esterhazy (1685-1686);
  • Francis Joseph Esterhazy (1686–1688);
  • Joseph I (1688-1721)

Pal died on March 26, 1713 in the Eisenstadt castle, which he thoroughly rebuilt. He was succeeded by the sons Michal and Joseph (from the first and second marriages); Until 1721, they owned the lands of the princely branch of the clan together. After the death of Joseph, all the possessions of Esterhazy were inherited by his sons - first Pal Antal , then Miklos Joseph .
