History
Kladrubitsky Benedictine monastery was founded in 1115 by the Czech prince Vladislav I. Vladislav I is buried directly in the monastery, which makes him one of the few Czech princes not buried in Prague. The monastery was mentioned in the Czech Chronicle by Kozma Prague . It is likely that the village of Kladruby existed for several decades before the foundation of the monastery, but there is no written evidence of that time.
At the end of the 17th century, the share of the German population was growing in the city. At that time, about 1300 people lived in Kladruby. In 1701 there was a plague in the city, and in 1711 the first major fire broke out here. The monastery existed for some time as a military hospital, and then as an almshouse. In 1843, it was bought by the aristocratic family of Windischgrets. In 1853-56, the monastery was converted into a brewery, but in 1860 the brewery burned down. In 1895, a school was founded, the teaching language of which was German. In the 1920s, the Czech minority established its own school. Before World War II, the city was dominated by the German population. According to the data for 1930, the population is 1370 people, of which the Czechs were less than 100 people. After World War II, the Germans were expelled. On April 12, 2007, Kladruby was returned the status of a city that was lost in 1960.
