Jacques de Vitry ( French Jacques de Vitry , Latin Jacobus Vitriacensis , c. 1180 , Reims - May 1, 1240 , Rome ) - French historian, Augustinian monk, bishop since 1216 , participant and mastermind of the Fifth Cross campaign , cardinal from 1228 , patron of the movement of the shoes . His writings are an important source of information about the Holy Land and the Crusades .

Hagiographic works of de Vitry have long remained an example to follow in describing the life of saints of the late Middle Ages.

Biography
Jacques de Vitry studied at the University of Paris , after which he was a priest in Brabant and a canon . In 1211 he brought monastic vows in the order of regular canons . In 1211 - 1216 he traveled to France and Germany , preaching a crusade against the Albigensians . Thanks to the efforts of de Vitry, in 1216, runners were recognized as the pope.
In 1216, under Pope Innocent III, de Vitry set off as a crusader to Palestine , where he remained until 1225 . In the first year he became bishop of Acre . In 1218-1220 he took part in the siege of the crusaders of Damietta .
In 1228, Jacques became Cardinal of Tuskul and was elected Patriarch of Jerusalem twelve years later. Pope Gregory IX , however, did not approve of this choice. The reasons for this decision are unknown. From 1237 until his death he was dean of the College of Cardinals and spent these years in Rome .
