History

Initially, Sergius Vicariate was established in the early 1920s. It was named after the city of Sergiev (now Sergiev Posad, Moscow region ).

On February 24, 1946, by decree of the Patriarch of Moscow Alexy I, Archimandrite Nikon (de Greve) was consecrated bishop of Sergiev and fed parishes in Belgium. However, shortly after the death of Metropolitan Eulogius (George), Bishop Nikon resigned from the Moscow Patriarchate and Bishop John (Leonchukov) was appointed to the department, who was not slow to follow Nikon.

The department was restored with the consecration of Bishop Anthony of St. Sergius (Bloom) on November 30, 1957 as vicar of the Western European Exarchate . The field of his preaching became Great Britain , where his works created the new Diocese of Sourozh , to which he was transferred on October 10, 1962.

February 22, 1993 Sergius Vicariate was restored, now as the Vicar of the Sourozh diocese [3] .

In 2002, the Holy Synod, without abolishing the Sergius Vicariate, established the Sergius Posad Vicariate of the Moscow diocese with the consecration on March 31, 2002, the viceroy of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra Feognost (Guzikov) in the bishop of Sergiev Posad, with his stay in his former place. This fact caused discontent of the Bishop of St. Sergius Vasily (Osborne) [4] .
