Biography
Born in the village of Popovichi near Glamoch (BiH). He graduated from high school there. He graduated from the Military Academy in Belgrade , then improved his skills abroad. He was fluent in Russian and English. Throughout his military career, he served in many garrisons of the SFRY . He was twice wounded during the riots in Kosovo and Metohija in the 70s. He met the beginning of the collapse of the country in Split , from where he was appointed to Knin , to the team of Ratko Mladic , who then headed the 9th Knins Building of the UNA . Together with him, in the spring of 1992, he moved to BiH, and when the war came there, he took the post of deputy chief of intelligence and counterintelligence of the main headquarters of the Republika Srpska Army . He was not idle at this post: during the war he provided food for Serbian refugees from the Muslim regions of BiH, as well as personally selected the protection of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.
He was one of the seven deputies of Ratko Mladic. He also checked the activities of the 10 sabotage squad of the VRS and the 65th guard regiment. Tolimir was one of the leaders of the military operation to capture Srebrenica and Zepa in the summer of 1995. He took an active part in the liberation of the French pilots shot down by the air defense of the air forces during the bombing of the Serbian positions by NATO aircraft. He participated in the negotiations in Dayton , was responsible for the interpretation of the military part of the Paris Peace Treaty. He also participated in the Vienna arms control negotiations in the former Yugoslavia. After the dismissal of Mladic, by the decision of Biljana Plavsic in 1996, Tolimir was retired. In February 2005, the Hague Tribunal brought charges against him and the generals Milan Gvero and Radivoe Miletić for committing crimes against Bosnian Muslims from Srebrenica and Zepa. On May 31, 2007, Tolimir was arrested near Bratunac , on the territory of Republika Srpska [1] , and on the third day after his arrest he was extradited to The Hague [2] . Tolimir himself claimed that he was arrested in Belgrade, and only then delivered to the territory of the RS.
On December 12, 2012, the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia found him guilty of genocide, persecution and forced displacement of Bosnian Muslims in 1995 in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The court ruled that Tolimir was responsible for participating in a joint criminal act whose purpose was to destroy the Muslim population of the enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa [3] .
He died in the prison of the Hague Tribunal [4] .
