Biography

From the most tender childhood, and I don’t know why, I promised myself to become a writer. It was this kind of human activity for reasons that I find it difficult to explain that seemed to me the pinnacle of all nobility and bliss [3] .

Born in the family of a surveyor engineer. Father, Vasily Vasilyevich, came from a heterogeneous family - his grandfather was a provincial bank accountant ; mother, Natalya Alekseevna (d. 1923), came from the noble family of the Kostyurins . In addition to Leo, there was another child in the family, the younger brother Vsevolod (1902-1960). At the age of five, Leo learned to read and in 1906 he entered school, but at the insistence of the doctor he was transferred to kindergarten. In 1912 he entered the gymnasium of K.I. May .

Ouspensky and his family met the October Revolution of 1917 with approval. His father worked for M.I. Kalinin in Petrograd, then moved to Moscow , where, together with M.D. Bonch-Bruevich and his two brothers, he became one of the initiators, and then the heads of the Main Geodetic Directorate , in which he worked until his death in 1931.

After the revolution, Uspensky lived with his mother and brother in the Pskov province , was engaged in agriculture, and in 1918-1919 he worked as a land surveyor . In the winter of 1919 he returned to Petrograd, studied at the Forest Institute . In 1920 he was mobilized into the labor army , worked on logging , and underwent elementary military training. Then he participated in the Civil War , was the topographer of the headquarters of the 10th Infantry Division, fought with Bulak-Balakhovich detachments , and received a heavy shell-shock near Warsaw . In 1921-1922 he worked as an assistant forester , and in the fall of 1922 he returned to Petrograd, where he again passed the exams at the Forest Institute. At the same time, he met Alexandra Semenovna Ivanova (1902-1990), who soon became his wife. In 1923-1924, the Forest Institute was reorganized and Uspensky left it. In the fall of 1925 he entered the Higher Courses of Art History at the State Institute of the History of Arts [3] , which he graduated in 1929. In 1925 he published his first scientific work - on the “Russian language of the era of revolution”. He was a lecturer in biology, taught drawing, the Russian language, worked as a methodologist in the cabinet of visual agitation.

In 1928, in the Kharkov private publishing house Cosmos (the GPU was not allowed to print in Leningrad ) , the adventurous novel “The Smell of Lemon” was written by Uspensky co-authored by L. A. Rubinov (Rubinovich) under the common pseudonym Lev Rubus. This fantasy adventure novel, written in the “ Pinkerton Red ” style typical of the 1920s, describes the struggle of international forces for the possession of “revolutionite” - a radioactive substance of extraordinary power found in a meteorite .

After graduating from the Institute of Art History, he worked as an editor. In 1930-1932, a graduate student of the State Institute of Speech Culture . He was a student and later a colleague in the work of many famous Soviet linguists: academicians V.V. Vinogradov , B.A. Larin , L.V. Shcherba , corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences S. G. Barkhudarov , professors L. P. Yakubinsky , A.P. Riftin. He taught Russian at a university under the guidance of S. G. Barkhudarov.

In 1935-1936, Ouspensky worked at the House of Entertaining Science , one of the organizers of which he was. Then he began to be published in the children's magazines " Chizh " and " Hedgehog ", then released a separate book of children's stories "The Cat on the Plane." From the end of 1936 until the start of the Great Patriotic War, he headed the scientific-cognitive department of the Bonfire magazine. Then he participated in work on the Old Russian dictionary, wrote two books on ancient Greek mythology : “12 Feats of Hercules” and “The Golden Fleece” (later books were released under the general title “Myths of Ancient Greece”). In 1939 he joined the Union of Writers of the USSR . In the same year, the novel Pulkovo Meridian, written by him together with military historian G.N. Karaev , was published, which describes the historical events of 1919.

Since the early 1930s, Ouspensky worked on the novel "1916", fragments of which were published in periodicals, but the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War prevented its full publication (the novel was published only in 2010) [4] .

On June 23, 1941, Ouspensky was drafted into the army and, with the rank of quartermaster of the 3rd rank of the fleet, was assigned to Lebyazhye , to the Kronstadt coastal posts. For more than a year he served in the political department of the Izhora fortified area , working as a war correspondent in the editorial office of the newspaper “Battle volley”. In January 1943, together with V.V. Vishnevsky, he was sent to the right bank of the Neva and became an eyewitness of the breaking of the blockade between January 12 and 25. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star .

Since September 1944, he was on a business trip to the Danube Flotilla , spent two months in the Balkans , in Romania , Bulgaria and other countries, following the advancing units of the Soviet Army . At the end of November 1944 he arrived in Moscow, in the autumn of 1945 he was demobilized and returned to Leningrad to his family.

In 1946, in the magazine " Around the World " appeared Ouspensky's science fiction story "Zeta Sailing" - about sailing a submarine on the underground rivers of Europe.

In 1951, the writer made a long trip around the country: he traveled to Central Asia , went in a small tugboat all the Amu Darya from Chardzhou to Nukus . As a result of this trip, articles and a series of poems about Central Asia were written.

In 1954, one of the most famous books of Uspensky's “ Word about Words ” was first published in Detgiz , his first popular book on linguistics . In 1955, Detgiz released the novel The Sixtieth Parallel, also written by Ouspensky in collaboration with Karaev, which reflects the events of World War II and the defense of Leningrad from the outbreak of the war until the spring of 1942. In 1960, the second philological book of Uspensky, “You and Your Name,” appeared in the same publishing house. At the same time, in collaboration with K. N. Schneider Uspensky, a book on archeology “For seven seals” was published by the publishing house “Young Guard” and a book on Leningrad “On 101 Islands”, published in the Leningrad branch of the publishing house “Detgiz” in 1957 year.

In the 1960s, Ouspensky served as chairman of the section of science fiction and science fiction literature of the Leningrad branch of the Union of Writers of the USSR, was a member of the editorial board of the scientific and artistic almanac " I want to know everything ", the magazine "Bonfire".

In March 1970, L. V. Uspensky was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for his services to the development of Soviet literature and in connection with the 70th anniversary of his birth. In the same year, his autobiographical book, Notes of an Old Petersburger, was published. Two of his fantastic stories were later published: En-two-o plus X twice (1971) and Shalmugrovy apple (1972). In the last years of his life, Ouspensky worked on a short book, Notes of an Old Staple. The writer’s announced novel, Xi Star, was never completed.

He died in Leningrad, was buried in the Theological Cemetery , where his grave is located on the Bratsk path, almost opposite the grave of Viktor Tsoi .
