At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Burundi failed to win a single Olympic medal. Francine Niyonsaba managed to reach the final at a distance of 800 meters , in which she finished seventh. At the same time in the semifinal race Niyonsaba managed to update the national record. The standard-bearer of the team, Diana Nukuri, took 31st place in the marathon , and also set a new record for Burundi.
