The steppe reaper ant [3] , or the European reaper ant [4] ( lat. Messor structor ) is a species of monogynous reaper ant of the genus Messor ( tribe Pheidolini , subfamily Mirmitsyna ). Under the name Messor clivorum Ruzsky is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Tatarstan [5] [6] [7] .

Distribution
In a narrow taxonomic volume (since 2018) it is found in European countries such as Austria , Bulgaria , Czech Republic , France , Hungary , Romania , Slovenia [2] . In the old broad taxonomic Messor “structor” volume (before dividing into 5 species) was widespread in the Western Palaearctic. It occurs in the countries of the Mediterranean , Southern and Eastern Europe , the Caucasus , Central and Central Asia, Afghanistan , Iran and Iraq , Lebanon , Syria , and Israel [8] .

The sizes of workers and polymorphic soldiers vary from 3 to 9 mm. The size of females and males is about 1 cm.
Taxonomy
Earlier, the name Messor “structor” (Latreille, 1798) was understood as a whole complex of species, which in 2018 during the molecular genetic studies of DNA and Wolbachia symbionts were divided into 5 separate species: Messor structor (Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Hungary , Romania, Slovenia), M. ibericus Santschi, 1925 (Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland), M. muticus (Nylander, 1849) stat.rev. (Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Romania, Russia, Ukraine), and two species new to science, M. ponticus sp.n. (Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine) and M. mcarthuri sp.n. (Greece, Turkey) [2] .
