Biography
Camping was born July 19, 1921 in Colorado in a Christian family. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to California, where Harold graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1942 and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Shortly after the Second World War, Camping opened his own construction business, which gave him the bulk of his income.
In 1958, together with his partners , he founded the Christian educational network - Family Radio ("Family Radio").
Harold and his wife Shirley until 1988 belonged to the Christian Reformed Church in North America where Harold was an elder and a Bible teacher. [6] Then they left the church because, according to Camping,
... today God does not save more people in churches. Church time has come to an end. Moreover, God commands the Bible in His book of Law, so that true believers leave their churches. And this is because God performs His righteous judgment on all local churches, preparing the world for the day of the Court.
Doomsday Predictions
Camping began a vibrant preaching activity in the 1970s , claiming that he had developed a calculation system based on his own interpretations of Bible prophecies that could help determine the beginning of Doomsday.
Harold Camping predicted the end of the world in 1994 and 2011 .
At the beginning of 2011, Camping announced that on May 21, 2011, all the righteous would ascend to heaven, and sinners would remain on Earth, where they would face a series of devastating natural disasters, and the apocalypse would end with the complete destruction of the planet. After the prediction did not come true, Camping was hospitalized with a stroke diagnosis on June 9th .
After some time, Camping spoke about his new revelation: Judgment Day came on May 21, but spiritually, not physically. The world is being judged. Camping moved the date of the ascension of the righteous to October 21 [7] , but this prediction did not come true either. He later announced his resignation as director of Family Radio . [8]
In 2011, Harold Camping, along with other loser prophets, was awarded the Shnobel Prize for "mathematical" predictions of the " end of the world ." [9]
In March 2012, Camping announced that he no longer plans to predict the day of God's judgment. He also apologized to the audience, admitting that he was wrong.
A statement from Camping and Family Radio staff said:
Even the most sincere and zealous of us can be wrong. We understand that many people hope to find out the date of Christ's return. Indeed, ... for a while, Family Radio held that mind. But now we understand that those people who turned our attention to the biblical words that “no one knows this day and hour” (Matthew 24:36 and Mark 13: 32) were right in their understanding of these verses, and Family Radio was wrong. Will God give us some indication of the date of His return hidden in God's divine plans.
Death
December 15, 2013 Harold Camping passed away. The reason was incompatible with life fractures, which he received two weeks earlier, having fallen at home. One of the employees of Family Radio [10] [11] [12] [13] reported the death.
