The most valuable player in the ABA regular season ( ABA Most Valuable Player Award ) is a title annually awarded to the most valuable player of the American Basketball Association in the regular season. The award was awarded annually from 1968 to 1976, when the American Basketball Association merged with the National Basketball Association . In order for a player to win an award, he had to win at least 45 victories in the regular season with the team.
The first player to win this award was Connie Hawkins from the Pittsburgh Pipers Club. Julius Irving three times in the " New York Nets " was recognized as the most valuable player in the regular season. Mel Daniels from Indiana Pacers twice won the award. Two newcomers of the year ABA were simultaneously recognized as the most valuable players in the regular season: Spencer Haywood in 1970 and Artis Gilmore in 1972.
