AppearanceThe length of the body is 27 cm. In the plumage of the male , the green color prevails. The forehead, the spot on the wings and the lower tail coverts are yellow-orange. The middle part of the belly is colored red. The female is painted much more modest, mainly in olive-brown tones. Bill is black. The eye ring is gray-brown, the iris is brown. Paws are skin colored. In nature, there are many variations of colors within the species.
SpreadIt lives in the southern regions of inland Australia .
LifestyleThey inhabit forest-steppes with sparse vegetation, mainly in arid areas. They willingly lodge in cultural landscapes, especially in rural areas. They feed mainly on grass seeds, as well as various small insects and their larvae.
ReproductionThe female lays from 4 to 6 eggs , which incubates for 21-22 days. Both partners participate in feeding the chicks, after 35 days the chicks fly out of the nest.
ContentsThis species was first introduced to Europe in 1862 . The cells contain less frequently than the red-backed parrot , with which they are very similar in behavior and conditions of detention. As a rule, birds are kept in pairs, with the joint content of several pairs quarrels are possible, especially during the nesting period.
