Biography

Thomas was born in Kempen, near Krefeld, in the Cologne Electory, to the family of Jan and Gertrude Hemerken in 1380 . The surname refers to the profession of a father who worked as a blacksmith , in the North- Low - Franks dialect hemerken is a small hammer. Mother was a teacher [2] .

In 1392, Thomas, following his brother Jan, goes to school in Deventer in the Utrecht bishopric . He studied until 1399 and joined the movement "Brotherhood of Common Life" , which was a continuation of the movement "New Piety" Gert Groth .

Until June 4, 2006, his remains were in the chapel of the in Zwolle . Nowadays the resting place of Thomas the Kempis is the in Zwolle .

The work β€œOn the imitation of Christ” was first published in the Church Slavonic translation of Orest Nasturila on the territory of modern Romania in 1647, also translated into Russian at the end of the 17th century by the Belarusian philosopher Andrei Belobotsky .
