Early years
Del Negro was born on August 9, 1966 in Springfield , Massachusetts , USA . His father, Vince, had success in basketball at a young age, it was he who taught his son this sport. Winnie played for Cathedral High School. With his game, he attracted the attention of the Suffield Academy coach, who convinced him to join his team. Vinnie led her to two New England championships. During his performances for the Academy, he scored 1116 points, which is a team record. [one]
Del Negro played for the University of North Carolina . In the last year of training, he was selected as a symbolic team of his conference, gaining an average of 15.9 points, 3.6 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game.
Player Career
Del Negro was selected at number 29 in the 1988 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings . He played two seasons in the NBA before leaving for the Italian Benetton for another two years (he won the Italian Championship in 1992 with more than 25 points on average per game).
After his return to the NBA, Del Negro played for the San Antonio Spurs for the next six years. In early 1999, he played 4 matches in the Italian Championship for Fortitude , before signing a contract with Milwaukee Bucks , where he played in the seasons 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 . In June 2000, in a three-way deal involving the Cleveland Cavaliers , Winnie was traded to the Golden State Warriors . In January 2001, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns , then to the Los Angeles Clippers , but never having played a single match for them, ended his career.

Coaching career
Del Negro worked as a commentator on the Phoenix Suns radio station before joining the Suns coaching staff in 2006. [2] In 2007, he was promoted to the position of Assistant General Manager of Phoenix. [3]
On June 9, 2009, several media reported that Del Negro agreed to lead the Chicago Bulls . He became a favorite for the position of head coach after Doug Collins withdrew his candidacy from consideration. [four]
Two days later, Del Negro was officially introduced as the new Bulls head coach, becoming the 17th coach in Chicago history.
Del Negro ended his first season as the Chicago Bulls head coach with 41–41 wins and losses, finishing in 7th place at the Eastern Conference , thereby securing himself in the playoffs. The rivals of the Bulls went to the Boston Celtics , whose resistance in the seven-match series could not be broken.
Del Negro finished his second season again with 41–41 and reached the playoffs from eighth place in the conference. The Bulls lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a five-match series.
On May 4, 2010, Chicago Bulls announced the dismissal of Del Negro. [5] On July 6, 2010, several sources announced that Winnie had become the new Los Angeles Clippers head coach. [6] Del Negro finished the first season at Clippers with 32–50. Despite not getting into the playoffs, a significant result for the team was that the Los Angeles player Blake Griffin was named Rookie of the Year . [7]

Del Negro has Italian roots. [8] His father, Vince, played basketball for the University of Kentucky . [9]
